📖 Verse Of The Day

— Proverbs 30:4

🧠 Devotional

Almost all of The Book of Proverbs is connected to Solomon

That is why Proverbs 30 feels so strange when you read it.

After chapter after chapter of Solomon’s wisdom, Proverbs 30 suddenly opens with:

“The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance.”
(Proverbs 30:1 NKJV)

And the crazy part is we know almost nothing about Agur.

Some scholars think Agur may have been a non-Israelite wise man because his name and wording sound unusual compared to the rest of Proverbs. Others think he was simply an unknown Jewish sage whose sayings became respected and preserved over time.

It shows biblical wisdom was never about fame, status, or sounding impressive.

Then Agur immediately says something almost shocking for a “wisdom” book:

“Surely I am more stupid than any man,
And do not have the understanding of a man.
I neither learned wisdom
Nor have knowledge of the Holy One.”
(Proverbs 30:2–3 NKJV)

That wording is intentionally extreme.

Agur is not literally saying he knows nothing. After all, he is writing one of the wisest chapters in Proverbs.

He is saying that compared to God’s wisdom, human wisdom feels microscopic.

And you can see that in the very next verse:

“Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has bound the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?”
(Proverbs 30:4 NKJV)

Notice what he does.

He moves from human limitation… to God controlling creation itself. The wind, oceans, earth, heavens.

Agur realizes the more you understand who God is, the less arrogant you become about your own understanding.

That is why Proverbs 30 actually fits perfectly inside Proverbs. Because the foundation of biblical wisdom is humility before God.

Earlier Proverbs already said:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
(Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)

The beginning of wisdom is realizing that God is infinitely above us. And Proverbs 30 may be one of the clearest examples of that in the whole Bible.

So know this: The “wise man” is the one humble enough to admit his understanding has limits.
