🧠 Devotional

You know those movies where someone gets stuck living the same day over and over again?

After repeating the day enough times, they start knowing everything that’s going to happen. They can finish someone’s sentence, predict who’ll walk through the door, or point out something that’s about to happen before it does.

And there’s usually that scene where they try to convince someone they’re telling the truth. So they start predicting everything around them, word for word, moment by moment, until the other person finally believes them.

Now, imagine knowing what’s going to happen without having to live through it first.

That’s where this gets interesting, because the Bible tells us something remarkable about God.

He already knows.

Psalm 139:4 says, “Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.” (NIV)

Not after you say it. Not halfway through your sentence. Before a single word comes out of your mouth, God already knows what you’re going to say.

And that’s just the beginning.

A couple of verses earlier, Psalm 139:2 says God knows when we sit down and when we get up. He even understands our thoughts from far away.

So God doesn’t just know the words that come out of our mouths. He knows the thoughts behind them, too.

But what about things that haven’t happened yet?

Psalm 139:16 says that all the days ordained for David were written in God’s book before one of them came to be.

And in Isaiah 46:10, God declares that He makes known the end from the beginning, including things that haven’t happened yet. In that passage, He’s also making clear that His purposes will stand.

Put those passages together, and we see that God’s knowledge isn’t limited to the present.

He knows what’s ahead.

Now, think back to those movies.

The character can predict everything because they’ve already experienced it. They had to live through the day, make mistakes, and learn what happens.

But God doesn’t need to do any of that.

He doesn’t need a practice run. He doesn’t have to wait to find out what happens next. And He certainly doesn’t need to relive tomorrow to know what’s coming.

But here’s something else worth noticing.

Psalm 139 isn’t just about how much God knows. It’s about how personally He knows us.

In Psalm 139:1, David says the Lord has searched him and knows him. And in verse 10, David says that even wherever he goes, God’s hand will guide him and hold him fast.

So the same God who knows our words before we speak them is also the God whose presence David says he can never escape.

And that’s what makes this so comforting.

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. We don’t know every conversation we’ll have, every decision we’ll face, or every unexpected thing that might happen.

But God does.

In those movies, knowing what’s coming gives the character an advantage.

In real life, we don’t have that advantage. We can’t skip ahead, replay the day, or see what’s around the corner.

But we can trust the God who already knows.

Tomorrow might be a mystery to us, but it isn’t a mystery to Him.
