You’ve probably heard this familiar Christian call-and-response. It goes:

“God is good.”
“All the time.”
“And all the time…”
“God is good.”

It’s actually a simple form of antimetabole, which is just a fancy way of saying the same idea again in reverse. God is good all the time. All the time, God is good. Flipping it around reinforces the point: there are no exceptions.

And that’s exactly how Scripture talks about God.

Psalm 100:5 says, “For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” There’s a lot packed into that one verse. It doesn’t just tell us that God does good things. It says “the LORD is good.” Then it immediately stretches that truth across time: His love endures forever, and His faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 119:68 makes the distinction even clearer: “You are good, and what you do is good.” Those are two different statements. God is good, and God does good. His goodness starts with His character, and what He does flows from who He is.

Then there’s the “all the time” part.

Psalm 52:1 puts that into remarkably direct language. In the KJV, it says, “The goodness of God endureth continually.” Continually is the key word. His goodness isn’t occasional or temporary. It continues.

James 1:17 adds another layer, describing God as one who “does not change like shifting shadows.” Put those truths together and the logic of the call-and-response becomes pretty clear. Scripture says God is good, His goodness continues, and His character does not change.

Psalm 136 takes the idea even further. All 26 verses end with the same declaration: “His love endures forever.” The Psalm moves through creation, Israel’s history, deliverance, battles, and provision, but the response stays exactly the same every time: His love endures forever.

So that little call-and-response actually packs a lot into four lines.

God is good. When? All the time.
And all the time, what remains true? God is good.

The Bible calls Him good. It says His goodness continues, His love endures forever, His faithfulness reaches through every generation, and His character does not change.

Say it forward or flip it around. The answer stays the same.
