There isn’t just one Bible in English because the Bible was not originally written in English, and language changes over time.
Some translations stay closer to the exact wording, while others focus on making the meaning clear, which is why multiple translations exist.
Two of the most widely used are the King James Version and the New International Version.
The King James Version has been around since 1611 and became dominant because it was used as the standard Bible in English-speaking churches for centuries. It shaped how people read and even spoke English, which is why it is still widely used today.
The New International Version is much newer, first published in 1978, and became popular because it is easier to understand in modern English.
The King James Version was published in 1611 in England and approved by King James I. About fifty scholars worked on it. Their goal was to create one official Bible for the church and stay as close as possible to the original Hebrew and Greek wording.
Because it was written in the 1600s, it uses older English.
The New International Version was translated by over one hundred scholars from different countries. Their goal was to make the Bible accurate and clear in modern English.
Both use the same general Hebrew text for the Old Testament, but the New Testament is where they differ more. The KJV used a smaller set of later Greek manuscripts that were available at the time. The NIV uses a much larger number of manuscripts, including older ones that were discovered later.
The main difference comes down to translation approach. The KJV stays closer to the exact wording and structure of the original languages, while the NIV focuses on clearly communicating the meaning in modern English.
So know this: the wording may differ, but the message stays the same.
