I’m going to ask you a question that kind of sounds like the setup of a joke, but I promise you it’s not. It’s actually quite deep.

Which way does a tree fall?

You might say to yourself… down. But the real answer is: a tree falls the way it leans.

This is a literal question, but it’s also a metaphor.

We’re the tree. We’re always leaning one way or the other. We either lean toward God or lean away from Him.

We lean toward Him by choosing Him, by seeking Him, by obeying Him, by spending time with Him, by trusting Him even when it’s hard.

We lean away when we ignore Him, when we choose sin, when we follow our own way, when we put other things before Him, when we slowly drift.

And when we fall, when our life ends, that direction is set.

And the crazy part is a quote similar to this shows up in Ecclesiastes 11:3, which says:

“Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.”

Now these aren’t saying the exact same thing, but they mean the exact same thing.

That verse is saying once a tree falls, it stays there. You can’t move it after it hits the ground. So you have to be careful which way it’s leaning before it falls.

And the quote is saying the same thing from the other direction. A tree falls the way it leans, so you need to watch which way you lean, because once you fall, you can’t change it.

You might know you’re leaning the wrong way and think you’ll fix it later. But you never know when lightning will strike, when a storm will come through, or when a lumberjack will come by and cut you down.

So ask yourself, which way do you lean? Because the way you are leaning right now will be the way you fall.
