🧠 Devotional

There’s a verse in the Bible (Proverbs 27:5) that goes like this:

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love.”

Better is open rebuke…
than hidden love.

Open rebuke means someone tells you the truth, even if it’s uncomfortable.
Hidden love means someone cares about you but stays quiet when you’re wrong.

This was written by Solomon, a king known for his wisdom, in the book of Proverbs. He’s writing this as wisdom for everyone.

And the Bible explains this idea right after:

“Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” (Proverbs 27:6)

So what it’s saying is: A real friend might say something that stings a little…
but you can trust it.

Someone else might keep things easy, say what you want to hear, and never challenge you…
and that feels good, but it doesn’t actually help you.

You see this same idea in the New Testament too:

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault…” (Matthew 18:15)

And the way you do it matters:

“Speak the truth in love…” (Ephesians 4:15)

So put simply: It’s better to be told the truth, even if it stings… than to be “loved” by someone who stays quiet and lets you stay wrong.

And this is where it all comes together. The Bible also talks about what happens if you ignore correction:

“Whoever ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.” — Proverbs 15:32

So it’s not just about having people in your life who tell you the truth. It’s also about being willing to hear it. Because if you push it away, you’re not helping yourself, you’re hurting yourself. But if you listen, even when it’s uncomfortable, that’s how you grow.

So know this: Real love doesn’t stay quiet when truth is needed. It speaks up because it actually cares.
