Good morning. Today is Saturday, June 13th!

🥳 Congratulations on starting today with God, and thank you for letting us be a part of it.

📖 Verse Of The Day

— Psalm 8:3

🧠 Devotional

Psalm 8 is one of the most fascinating psalms because it zooms all the way out to the scale of the universe, then suddenly zooms all the way back into humanity.

David is most likely outside at night looking at the sky when writing it. You can feel that throughout the psalm. He says:

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…”
Psalm 8:3

Notice he calls them “the work of your fingers.”

Just His fingers… The same stars humans still barely understand are described almost casually, like God placed them effortlessly.

Then David asks one of the deepest questions in the Bible:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
Psalm 8:4

That’s really the heart of the psalm.

David looks at the size of creation and wonders why the God who made all of it would care about humanity at all.

And honestly, that question hits even harder today than it did for David because now we know the universe is vastly bigger than he could’ve imagined. There are trillions of stars and galaxies, yet Psalm 8 says God is still mindful of humanity.

Another interesting detail is that Psalm 8 begins and ends with the exact same line:

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
Psalm 8:1, 9

That’s a literary technique called an inclusio. It acts like bookends around the chapter, showing the entire psalm is centered on God’s majesty.

There’s also an intentional contrast throughout the psalm between:

  • the greatness of the heavens

  • and the smallness of humans

Yet somehow, humans are still given honor and responsibility.

Psalm 8 says God made humanity:
“a little lower than the angels”
and:
“crowned them with glory and honor.”
Psalm 8:5

So Psalm 8 is really David standing beneath the heavens, overwhelmed by the greatness of God, amazed that the Creator of all of it still cares about humanity and realizing that God even gave humans responsibility within creation itself.
