🧠 Devotional
There’s a quote that goes like this:
“The Bible is meant to be bread for daily use, not cake for special occasions.”
And the Bible says the same thing.
The verse Matthew 4:4 backs up the idea that the Bible is meant to be bread for daily use:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
And the verse Psalm 1:2 backs up the idea that it’s not meant to be cake for special occasions:
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
And this idea of “daily bread” isn’t random.
Back in Exodus 16, God gave Israel manna from heaven, but only enough for one day at a time. If they tried to store it up, it spoiled.
God designed it that way on purpose. He was teaching them to depend on Him daily, not occasionally.
So when Jesus says we live by every word that comes from God, He’s pointing back to that same pattern. Daily dependence.
And the Bible keeps using this same food language.
In Jeremiah 15:16:
“Thy words were found, and I did eat them…”
In 1 Peter 2:2:
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word…”
In Hebrews 5:13–14, it even talks about milk and solid food.
The point is clear. God’s Word is something you consume regularly to live and grow.
And there’s also a warning built into this.
James 1:22 says:
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…”
That’s what happens when you treat it like cake. You hear it occasionally, but it never becomes something you actually live on.
You don’t eat bread once a week and expect to survive.
So why do we treat God’s Word that way?
So know this: If you only go to God’s Word occasionally, you’re treating it like cake, but it was designed to be your daily bread.
