Good morning. Today is Saturday, June 11th!

📖 Verse Of The Day

— Hebrews 1:14

🧠 Devotional

Angels are mentioned nearly 300 times in the Bible.

They worship God, deliver His messages, protect His people, fight spiritual battles, and carry out His judgment.

Hebrews 1:14 even calls them “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.”

But here’s something most people never notice.

Even though angels are mentioned nearly 300 times, God only reveals a few of their names to us.

In the Protestant Bible, the clearest named holy angels are Michael and Gabriel.

Michael is God’s warrior.

In Daniel 10:13, he is called “one of the chief princes.” Daniel 12:1 says he protects God’s people. Jude 1:9 calls him “the archangel,” and Revelation 12:7 shows him leading heaven’s angels into battle against Satan. Every time Michael appears, he’s connected with protecting God’s people and fighting against evil.

Gabriel is God’s messenger.

In Daniel 8 and 9, he explains God’s visions to Daniel. Then in Luke 1, he announces the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. Every time Gabriel appears, God is revealing or announcing something incredibly important.

You may also be wondering about “the fallen angel” Lucifer.

Isaiah 14:12 says, “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!” Some older Bible translations use the name Lucifer instead of “morning star.” Many Christians believe this also points to Satan’s fall, while many biblical scholars believe Isaiah is primarily describing the king of Babylon. So the Bible never clearly says Lucifer was Satan’s name.

Revelation 9:11 also names Abaddon, or Apollyon in Greek, as the angel of the Abyss. If you include Tobit, which is in the Catholic and Orthodox Bibles but not most Protestant Bibles, you’ll also find Raphael, who says he is one of the seven angels who stand before God.

So why are Michael and Gabriel named while so many other angels aren’t?

The Bible never tells us, so we can’t know for sure.

But maybe it’s because they appear multiple times with the same God given roles. Their names help us recognize that it’s the same angel returning to carry out the same mission.

So know this: The Bible is incredibly intentional. Even the smallest details, like the few angel names God chose to reveal, help tell His story.
