📖 Verse Of The Day

— Romans 1:16

🧠 Devotional

Did you know the word “gospel” literally means “good news”?

So the phrases “spread the gospel” and “spread the good news” are basically saying the same thing.

Because the gospel is the good news, and the good news is the gospel.

The word “gospel” comes from the Greek word “euangelion” (εὐαγγέλιον), which means:
good message
good news
glad tidings.

In the ancient world, the word was often used for announcements like military victories, the arrival of a king, or world changing events.

So when the Bible calls the message of Jesus “the gospel,” it is calling it the greatest news ever announced.

But what is the good news?

The gospel is the message that Jesus Christ came to save sinners.

1 Corinthians 15:1–4 gives one of the clearest summaries of it:

“…Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

That is the heart of the gospel.

Humanity was separated from God because of sin, and nobody could save themselves through good works or religion. So God sent His Son.

Jesus lived the sinless life we could not live, died on the cross for sin, and rose from the dead.

That is why the gospel is called “good news.”

Christianity is not mainly about what humans do for God.
It is about what God has done for humans through Jesus.

And the word “news” matters too.

News is something that already happened.

The gospel is not advice on how to save yourself.
It is the announcement that Jesus has already made a way for sinners to be reconciled to God.

That is why Romans 1:16 says:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation…”

So know this: The gospel is the good news that salvation is available through Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ alone.
