Almost everyone has heard the story of Jonah. God told him to go to Nineveh and warn the people to repent. Jonah ran the opposite direction, was swallowed by a great fish (the Bible never actually says it was a whale), prayed from inside it, and eventually obeyed God.

Then something incredible happened.

The people of Nineveh listened.

From the king all the way down to the common people, the city repented. They fasted, humbled themselves before God, and God showed them mercy. It’s one of the greatest stories of repentance in the entire Bible.

Most people close the book of Jonah and assume that’s the end of Nineveh’s story.

It’s not.

About a hundred years later, we get the book of Nahum. You could almost call it the sequel to Jonah.

The people who repented in Jonah’s day were gone. A new generation had taken their place, and little by little Nineveh returned to its old ways. They became proud, violent, cruel, and turned away from God. Assyria grew into one of the most feared empires in the ancient world.

That is where Nahum comes in.

Jonah was a message of warning. Nahum is a message that the time for warning has passed.

One verse captures the whole book:

“The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.” (Nahum 1:3, NIV)

That is the heart of Nahum.

God had already shown Nineveh incredible mercy. He gave them a prophet. He gave them time to change. He gave them another generation. But they continued to reject Him.

God’s patience is real, but it is not endless.

Nahum tells Nineveh that judgment is finally coming. And not long after, it happened. In 612 BC, the city of Nineveh fell, just as Nahum had prophesied.

Reading Jonah and Nahum together gives you a fuller picture of who God is.

Jonah shows God’s mercy. Nahum shows God’s justice.

Sometimes people focus on one and forget the other, but the Bible never separates them. God loves to forgive anyone who genuinely turns to Him. At the same time, He does not ignore evil forever.

That is why Nahum matters. It reminds us that God’s patience should never be mistaken for approval. His mercy is an invitation to repent while there is still time.

Without Nahum, Jonah feels unfinished. Together, they tell one incredible story about a God who is both perfectly merciful and perfectly just.
