The Wild World of the Van Gogh Truthers
In 1990, after years of practicing medicine and reviewing Van Gogh’s case history via his hundreds of letters, Arenberg published a paper in JAMA diagnosing Van Gogh as suffering not from epilepsy, as the artist’s physician claimed a century earlier, but from Ménière’s disease, an inner-ear affliction that can cause vertigo, of which Van Gogh complained, and tinnitus, a persistent ringing in the ears. Ménière’s, to Arenberg, could better explain Van Gogh’s decision to slice off his ear. After retiring, in 2017, Arenberg recommitted himself to studying Van Gogh and became convinced that art historians had made an even more alarming mistake: Van Gogh had not committed suicide. He’d been murdered.

🧠 Devotional
Have you ever heard the word stewardship?
It’s a word that gets used a lot in church, but what does it actually mean?
A steward is simply someone who takes care of something that belongs to someone else. In Bible times, a wealthy owner would leave a trusted servant in charge of his house, land, money, and possessions while he was away. The steward had an important job, but none of it actually belonged to him.
The Bible says that’s us.
Everything we have has been entrusted to us by God. Our money, our time, our talents, our families, our jobs, our bodies, and even our lives all belong to Him. That’s why Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
This isn’t just a New Testament idea either. It goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. God placed Adam in the garden “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Adam wasn’t the owner of the garden. He was its steward. From the very beginning, God created people to care for what He had made.
Jesus taught this over and over. In the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, a master leaves his servants in charge of his money while he’s away. When he returns, he doesn’t ask how much they owned. He asks how faithfully they managed what had been entrusted to them.
That’s the heart of stewardship.
God never asked us to own everything. He asks us to faithfully care for everything He has placed in our hands. Every hour, every dollar, every ability, every relationship, and every opportunity is something He has trusted us with.
So here’s something to think about today.
What area of your life could you become a better steward of?
Maybe it’s your time. Maybe it’s your money, your health, your relationships, or a gift God has given you. No matter how big or small it seems, every part of your life is an opportunity to faithfully care for something that ultimately belongs to Him.
That’s what it means to be a good steward.
