In Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) the Bible says:

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

And speaking of “no one can fathom,” let’s try and fathom what this verse is telling us.

This was written by Solomon (the wisest person in the Bible), and he’s writing this in his book to explain what he’s learned about life and God’s timing.

Right before this verse, he says:

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

So the setup is this: life moves in seasons you don’t control.

The setup says that life moves in seasons you don’t control.

Because the verse explains that God still has a purpose and timing for it.

So when Solomon says “there is a time for everything,” he’s describing the problem, that you don’t control timing and life feels unpredictable.

Then in verse 11, he gives the explanation in three parts.

First, “He has made everything beautiful in its time” means everything has a right moment where it fits and makes sense, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.

Second, “He has also set eternity in the human heart” means God put something inside of you that knows there’s more than just this life, which is why you naturally look for meaning and something that lasts.

Third, “yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” means you won’t fully understand how everything fits together, because you only see your moment while God sees the whole timeline.

So the verse is saying: life may feel out of your control, but it’s not random, God has a timing for everything, you were made for more than just this life, and even if you can’t see the full picture, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
