Do you ever feel like you have good luck sometimes, and bad luck other times? Like things just go your way for a while, and then suddenly nothing does?

The Bible actually talks about that feeling. It just doesn’t really use the idea of luck the way we do.

It says, “time and chance happen to them all” (Ecclesiastes 9:11, NIV). From our point of view, life can feel random.

But then it also says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33, NIV). So even what looks random isn’t outside of God.

And this is where Isaiah really matters.

In Isaiah 65:11 it says, “But as for you who forsake the Lord… who spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny” (NIV).

That’s huge.

The Bible is calling out people who believed in “Fortune” and “Destiny” like they were real powers controlling life. They were trusting those things instead of trusting God.

So the Bible isn’t just silent on luck, it pushes back on it.

Biblically, the Bible never presents luck as a force running your life. It’s how we describe things we don’t understand.

When things go well, what we call “good luck,” the Bible calls blessing. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7, NIV).

When things go badly, what we call “bad luck,” the Bible explains it. Sometimes it’s consequences: “A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7, NIV). Sometimes it’s just life: “time and chance happen to them all” (Ecclesiastes 9:11, NIV). And sometimes it’s something God allows: “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10, NIV).

So the Bible talks about the feeling of luck, not luck itself. Isaiah makes that clear. People trusted in “Fortune,” and God calls that out.

So the point of today’s newsletter is this: the Bible doesn’t teach luck, it teaches trusting God whether life feels good or bad.
