📖 Verse Of The Day

— Psalm 133:1

🧠 Devotional

One of the shortest yet deepest chapters in the Bible was written by David, and it goes like this:

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.

It is like the dew of Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore.”
(Psalm 133 NKJV)

Psalm 133 is only 3 verses long, but David layers it with symbolism.

First, David says unity is “good” and “pleasant.” In Hebrew thought, “good” was not just morally right. It also carried the idea of something functioning the way God intended. So David is saying unity is part of God’s design for His people.

Then he compares unity to the oil poured on Aaron, Israel’s high priest. This was not normal oil. It was the sacred anointing oil used when priests were consecrated for God’s service. That means David is comparing unity to something holy and set apart.

And notice how he keeps emphasizing the oil “running down.” That repetition paints a picture of overflow and abundance. Unity is not pictured as dry obligation. It is pictured as something rich, overflowing, and sacred.

Then David shifts to “the dew of Hermon.” Mount Hermon was famous for heavy dew and snow, which fed water into the dry surrounding land. In ancient Israel, dew was associated with life because without moisture, crops died.

So David gives two pictures:
holy oil and life-giving water.

One points to holiness. The other points to life and refreshment.

And then the final line ties everything together:

“For there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore.”

David is showing that unity among God’s people is connected to God’s presence, blessing, life, and holiness all at once.
