🧠 Devotional
There’s a specific chapter in the Bible that teaches us that we are saved in order to do good.
And that chapter is Titus Chapter 3.
In many modern translations like the New International Version (NIV), you’ll even see a heading for this section that says exactly that: “Saved in order to do good.”
Verse 1 starts off by telling us this:
“Put them in mind… to be ready to every good work,” (Titus 3:1)
So right away, it’s pointing our lives toward doing good.
But then the chapter slows down and reminds us where we came from. It says we were once “foolish, disobedient, deceived,” living for ourselves (Titus 3:3), which brings us back to the reality that we didn’t start off good.
And that’s important, because right after that, it shows us what God did.
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…” (Titus 3:5)
So we’re not saved because we did good, or cleaned ourselves up first. God saved us purely out of His mercy, and He’s the one who made us new.
And then everything builds to this:
“This is a faithful saying… that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works.” (Titus 3:8)
So after making it clear that we’re saved by mercy and not by works, it immediately tells us what comes next. Those who believe should now be focused on living a life of doing good.
And this isn’t just said here. Even outside of Titus, the Bible says we were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).
And the chapter even ends the same way it began:
“Let our people learn to devote themselves to doing what is good…” (Titus 3:14)
So it starts with being ready to do good, and it ends with being devoted to doing good.
So know this: we don’t do good to be saved, we do good because we are saved, and because God has already made us new and called us to live that way.
