🧠 Devotional

Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

In simple terms, faith means trusting that what we hope is true about God and His promises really is true, even though we cannot see it yet.

One of the most comforting parts of this verse is the word hope. Notice what it does not say. It does not say faith is just thinking something might be true. It says faith is confidence in what we hope for. Faith begins with hope, and that hope becomes confidence.

Hebrews had already been building toward this idea earlier in the letter, almost like a callback.

Hebrews 10:23 says,

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

Our hope can be held unswervingly because he who promised is faithful.

Paul explains hope in a similar way in Romans 8:24–25:

“Who hopes for what they already have? … if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”

Hope is for something we do not yet have, so we wait for it patiently.

Other verses in Scripture sound almost like they foreshadow the same definition of faith.

2 Corinthians 5:7 says,

“We live by faith, not by sight.”

Faith means walking by faith, not by sight.

Jesus says something similar in John 20:29:

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Believing even though we have not seen.

Peter says the same thing in 1 Peter 1:8:

“Though you have not seen him… you believe in him.”

Believing in Christ even though you have not seen him.

So if you are struggling with your faith, remember what Hebrews 11:1 says. Faith is confidence in what we hope for. It begins with hope. So start there. Hope that what the Bible says about God is true. Hope that what it says about Jesus is true. And let that hope grow into confidence.
