🧠 Devotional

Did you know Psalm 110 is one of the most quoted and referenced Psalms in the New Testament

It is directly quoted or referenced in
Matthew 22:41–46
Mark 12:35–37
Luke 20:41–44
Acts 2:34–35
Acts 7:55–56
1 Corinthians 15:25
Ephesians 1:20–22
Colossians 3:1
Hebrews 1:3, 1:13, 5:6, 7:17, 10:12–13

Psalm 110 is only 7 verses but introduces ideas the New Testament keeps returning to

In verse 1, David says “The LORD says to my lord,” speaking of someone greater than himself
This is why Jesus uses this verse in Matthew 22
If the Messiah is David’s son, why does David call him Lord
Because the Messiah is not just his descendant but greater than him

In verse 4, it says “a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek”
In Israel kings and priests were separate roles
This psalm shows one person as both

That is why Hebrews uses this to explain Jesus
He is both King and Priest

The line about sitting at God’s right hand shows shared authority with God and becomes a core New Testament idea

Here it is in full (NIV):

The LORD says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”

The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of your enemies!”

Your troops will be willing
on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
your young men will come to you
like dew from the morning’s womb.

The LORD has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your right hand;
he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.

He will judge the nations,
heaping up the dead
and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.

He will drink from a brook along the way,
and so he will lift his head high.

So know this: Jesus is the King with authority and the one who brings you to God
