📖 Verse Of The Day

— Matthew 4:6

🧠 Devotional

Did you know the devil actually quoted Scripture to Jesus?

After Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, Satan came to tempt Him. What makes this story so fascinating is that the devil actually uses Scripture while talking to Jesus.

The conversation goes like this:

First, Satan tells Jesus:

“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
(Matthew 4:3)

Jesus answers:

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
(Deuteronomy 8:3 quoted in Matthew 4:4)

Then Satan takes Jesus to the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem and says:

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

‘They will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
(Matthew 4:6)

Here Satan is quoting Book of Psalms 91:11–12.

But the point Satan was trying to make was basically:
“If God really loves You and protects You, prove it. Make Him save You publicly.”

He wanted Jesus to test God, force a miracle, and gain attention in a spectacular way instead of following the Father’s actual plan.

But Jesus immediately sees through the manipulation and answers:

“It is also written:
‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
(Deuteronomy 6:16)

Then Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him.

Jesus responds:

“Away from me, Satan! For it is written:
‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
(Deuteronomy 6:13)

Then Satan leaves.

One of the deepest parts of this story is that Satan knows Scripture enough to quote it, but he twists its purpose. He removes it from its true meaning to tempt, manipulate, and deceive.

Jesus doesn’t just fight back with random verses. He understands the heart, context, and truth of God’s Word perfectly.
