📖 Verse Of The Day

— Numbers 5:22

🧠 Devotional

Do you know what the word “Amen” really means?

You might say, “Well, I say it at the end of every prayer,” but that’s not a definition.

Or maybe it’s one of those words where you use the word itself to define itself.

The word “Amen” first shows up in the Bible in Numbers 5:22, and the verse itself shows its meaning in context.

Numbers 5:22 (NIV)

“‘May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen.’”

So be it. Amen means so be it.

And that actually makes sense.

The word “Amen” comes from the Hebrew אָמֵן, pronounced the same way as in English. It comes from a root that means firm, faithful, trustworthy, or confirmed. In other words, when you say “Amen,” you are agreeing, trusting, and declaring that what was said is certain and true.

The word “Amen” is used many more times throughout the Bible, but it is never formally defined in words anywhere else. Its meaning is always shown by context, which we can see in some of the best examples.

Deuteronomy 27:26 (NIV)

“Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out. Then all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’”

1 Chronicles 16:36 (NIV)

“Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said, ‘Amen!’ and ‘Praise the Lord!’”

Revelation 22:20–21 (NIV)

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.”

In these verses, the meaning of “Amen” comes from context clues and repetition. In Deuteronomy, it follows the curse, showing agreement. In 1 Chronicles, the repeated “Amen” affirms praise. In Revelation, the placement at the end of Jesus’ promise signals trust and certainty. Through these examples, we see that “Amen” communicates agreement, confirmation, and trust. In other words, it means “so be it.”

So remember this, every time you say “Amen,” know what it means and mean it when you say it.
