🧠 Devotional

Did you know that Noah’s Ark was probably the largest wooden ship ever built?

In Book of Genesis 6:15 (NIV), it says:

“This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.”

When you ask historians what the largest wooden ship ever built was, their answer is usually the Wyoming, launched in 1909.

Here are its dimensions:

Wyoming (1909)

Length: 450 feet

Width: 50 feet

Noah’s Ark (Genesis 6:15, using an 18-inch cubit)

Length: 450 feet

Width: 75 feet

Height: 45 feet

Side by side, the ark would have been about the same length as the Wyoming, but considerably wider.

Now look at the volume.

Noah’s Ark (approximate rectangular volume):

450 × 75 × 45 = 1,518,750 cubic feet

Wyoming (approximate rectangular volume, not counting hull curve):

450 × 50 × 40 = about 900,000 cubic feet

So if the Bible is correct, that would make Noah’s ark not just tied for length, but significantly larger in overall volume.

Which would make it the largest wooden ship ever built. Ever…

Now if this was the largest wooden ship ever built of all time, it’s safe to assume that it was the biggest ship during that time, around 2500 BC.

What makes this even more impressive is that Noah likely didn’t have experience in shipbuilding or even ships in general.

In Book of Genesis 9:20 (NIV), it says:

“Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard.”

The Bible literally describes him as a man of the soil, someone associated with land, not the sea.

It certainly is possible that Noah did have experience with shipbuilding or ships in general and the Bible simply doesn’t mention it. But if he had been known for shipbuilding or experience with ships, you would think it would be mentioned.

So the next time something impossible is asked of you, remember that Noah quite literally did the impossible with God, building what was probably the largest wooden ship ever built.

🙏 Prayer (Guided by A.C.T.S.)

When you’re not sure how to pray, A.C.T.S. gives you a simple path to follow: Adore, Confess, Thank, and Ask.

Adoration: God, nothing is impossible for You.

Confession: Forgive me when I doubt and feel overwhelmed.

Thanksgiving: Thank You for giving Noah strength to do what seemed impossible.

Supplication: Help me trust You and obey, even when what You ask feels too big.

In Jesus name, Amen
