🧠 Devotional

In Acts 16:30, a Philippian jailer asks Paul and Silas:

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

And in the next verse, Acts 16:31, they answer:

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”

But something very specific led up to this conversation, and here it is:

Paul and Silas are preaching about Jesus, but a crowd turns against them, so they’re beaten and thrown into prison (Acts 16:22–23). They’re taken to the inner prison and locked in stocks so they can’t move (Acts 16:24).

At midnight, instead of complaining, they’re praying and singing to God while the other prisoners listen (Acts 16:25).

Then suddenly, a violent earthquake hits. The prison shakes, the doors open, and everyone’s chains fall off (Acts 16:26).

The jailer wakes up, sees the doors open, and assumes all the prisoners escaped. He draws his sword and is about to kill himself (Acts 16:27).

But Paul shouts out and stops him, saying everyone is still there (Acts 16:28).

No one ran.

The jailer runs in, shaking, sees all of this, brings them out, and asks:

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:29–30)

And that’s where we lead into the question and answer we started with.

It took a crisis, it took him thinking his life was over, it took him feeling like suicide was the only option. That’s what led him to ask the question, get it answered, and follow God.

This isn’t just a random question a jailer asked. This is the question every person eventually has to answer.

And the answer is simple:

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ…”

That doesn’t just mean knowing about Jesus. It means trusting Him, putting your faith in Him, and turning to Him.

So know this: The most important question you can ever ask has already been answered.
