🧠 Devotional
In Genesis 1:3 (NIV) it says,
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
And in Genesis 1:5 (NIV) it says,
“God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness he called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”
Meaning, God created light on the first day.
But here’s the crazy thing. The sun wasn’t created until the fourth day, as shown in these verses:
In Genesis 1:14–16 (NIV) it says,
“And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,
and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.’ And it was so.
God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”
And in Genesis 1:19 (NIV) it says:
“And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.”
So let’s take a deeper look at this.
On the first day, God spoke light into existence and called the light Day. That’s all the text says. There is no mention of the sun there.
Then on the fourth day, God created the sun and said it would rule or govern the day and mark seasons and years.
So if the sun governs the day, how did day exist in the first place?
Here’s a theory:
God didn’t need the sun for light and day because he was the source of that light during creation.
And here’s the scripture to back it up, and lots of it.
In James 1:17, God is called the Father of lights.
In 1 John 1:5, it says God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
In 1 Timothy 6:16, it says God dwells in unapproachable light.
In Psalm 104:2, God is clothed in light.
In Micah 7:8, the Lord shall be a light.
In Isaiah 60:19–20, the Lord is an everlasting light.
In Habakkuk 3:4, His brightness was like the light.
And in Revelation 21:23, the glory of God gives light and the Lamb is its light.
So how was there light before the sun? Because God is light.
