📖 Verse Of The Day

🧠 Devotion

The very first sentence in Scripture is only ten words in English, but it carries the entire weight of the Christian worldview. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Everything else in the Bible depends on this verse. If God is the Creator, then He has authority, purpose, and intention for the world He made.

Genesis does not start with an argument for God. It simply states that God is already there. This is the Bible’s starting point. Before matter, before time, before anything measurable existed, God was present. Psalm 90 verse 2 affirms this when it says, “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Genesis 1 verse 2 continues with a surprising picture. “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Scripture is clear that God does not begin with a finished world. The early earth is described as formless and empty. The Spirit of God is there, active, close, and moving. This shows that God does not stand far away from His creation. He is directly involved in shaping it.

Then Genesis 1 verse 3 records the first words God ever speaks in the Bible: “Let there be light.” And there was light. This is more than an act of creation. It is a display of God’s power and precision. God speaks, and creation responds instantly. The New Testament confirms this in Psalm 33 verse 9: “He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.”

The first three verses also reveal something important about how God works. He creates, He hovers, and He speaks. Creation involves His power, His presence, and His Word. This pattern repeats throughout Scripture. In John 1 verse 1 the apostle writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Verse 3 says, “Through Him all things were made.” The same God who spoke light into darkness is the One who speaks life through Christ.

These verses also show us something about order and purpose. God brings form to the formless and fills what is empty. That is the pattern of Genesis 1. God separates light from darkness, water from water, and land from sea. Then He fills the sky with stars, the water with sea creatures, and the land with plants, animals, and people. Isaiah 45 verse 18 says, “He did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited.” The opening verses introduce this entire theme.

The first lines of the Bible are simple but carry enormous meaning. God existed before creation. God intentionally made everything. God spoke light into darkness. God formed and filled the world with purpose. And God remains present and active in what He made.

Genesis does not just tell us how the world started. It tells us who is behind it and what He is like.
