🧠 Devotional
There’s an idea, a theory some Bible scholars point out, that the very first word of the Bible may already be pointing to Christ.
In Genesis 1:1, it says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (KJV)
For us, that’s three words, “in the beginning.” But in the original Hebrew, it’s one word: bereshit.
That word combines “be,” meaning “in,” with “reshit,” which means “beginning,” “first,” or “the starting point.”
So on the surface, it simply means “in the beginning.”
But inside that word is reshit, and that’s where the idea comes in.
In Proverbs 8:22, we hear from a figure called Wisdom, which is personification, meaning wisdom is described like a person speaking. And in that verse, Wisdom says, “The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way…” (KJV)
So Wisdom is describing itself as being there at the beginning.
Then in 1 Corinthians 1:24, Paul reveals that Christ is “the wisdom of God.”
So some scholars connect those ideas directly.
If Christ is the wisdom of God, and Wisdom in Proverbs is speaking as being there at the beginning, then that means Christ is the one being described there.
And this is where the claim goes further.
Some understand reshit, “the beginning,” as being used almost like a title in Proverbs 8, meaning Wisdom is not just talking about a moment in time, but identifying itself with “the beginning” itself.
So when you bring it back to Genesis:
The first word is bereshit.
Inside that word is reshit.
And if Christ is the Wisdom being described at the reshit, the beginning, then the very first word of the Bible is already pointing to Him.
That’s why some take it this far and say:
The first verse could be understood, not as a direct translation, but as a theological reading, as:
“In Christ, God created the heavens and the earth.”
And when you get to the New Testament, that direction lines up.
In John 1:1–3, it says, “In the beginning was the Word… All things were made by him.” (KJV)
So Genesis starts with “the beginning,” and the New Testament shows that Christ was there in that beginning and involved in creation.
