🧠 Devotional

Jesus is giving the famous Sermon on the Mount when He drops this gem of a quote that Matthew later includes in his gospel in Matthew 6:21, and it goes like this:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Right before this, He’s talking about not storing up treasures on earth:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19)

And right after, He contrasts that by telling them to store up treasures in heaven:

“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:20)

So basically, Jesus isn’t just talking about money here. He’s saying whatever you value most, that’s where your heart will be.

This point is so important that He says it again in Luke:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34)

And in Luke, He gives more context, telling people to be rich toward God:

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor… provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail…” (Luke 12:33)

The Bible tells us this, but does it show us this? Yes, yes it does.

A good example is King David, whose heart was devoted to God:

“I will seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.” (Psalm 119:10)

A bad example is Achan, who let earthly treasure control his heart:

“I saw among the spoil a beautiful Babylonian garment and two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold; and I coveted them and took them.” (Joshua 7:21)

So remember this: for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
