🧠 Devotional
Today we’re going to look at the entire first chapter of Psalms.
It’s relatively short compared to other chapters in Psalms, being just 6 verses.
Here it is:
Psalm 1 (NIV)
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither
whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
So after reading this, here’s what it’s saying:
Psalm 1 is showing two paths. The first is someone who doesn’t follow the wrong influence but instead focuses on God. And when it says walk, stand, and sit, it’s showing a progression, you slowly become shaped by what you’re around. Instead, this person delights in God’s word, meaning it’s something they actually care about and think about consistently.
Because of that, they’re like a tree planted by water, stable and growing over time, not instantly. The other path is the opposite. It’s someone living without God, and they’re compared to chaff, the light, useless part that gets blown away, with no root or foundation.
And when it says the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, it means He’s involved in it, guiding it. The other path leads to destruction.
So it’s simple.
One path leads to a steady life with God.
The other leads to a life that doesn’t last.
So know this: the direction of your life is being shaped by what you choose to listen to, think about, and build your life on.
