🧠 Devotional
Many people understand God the Father and Jesus Christ, but the Holy Spirit can sometimes be less familiar.
So who is the Holy Spirit?
The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as God.
One place we see this is in a moment involving Ananias, who we learned about recently.
Acts 5:3–4 (NIV)
“Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.’”
Peter first says Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit and then says he lied to God. In this passage, lying to the Holy Spirit is described as lying to God.
Jesus also spoke about the Holy Spirit before He returned to heaven.
John 16:13–14 (NIV)
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”
Here Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Spirit of truth.” He says the Spirit will guide believers into truth and glorify Him.
The Bible also says that the Holy Spirit lives in those who believe.
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
Because of this, the Holy Spirit is described as living in believers. The Spirit guides them into truth and helps them follow Christ.
The Bible also describes the Spirit helping believers in their weakness.
Romans 8:26 (NIV)
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
So when the Bible speaks about the Holy Spirit, it describes Him as God, the Spirit of truth, who lives in believers, helps them, and glorifies Jesus.
