Are You Ready to Actually Retire?

Knowing when to retire is harder than knowing how much to save. The timing depends on what your retirement actually looks like: how long your money needs to last, what you'll spend, and where your income comes from.

🧠 Devotional

In the Bible, Jesus told many parables, and this is one of them:

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price

In Matthew 13:45–46 (KJV):

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:
Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.”

And that’s literally it. Two verses. That’s the whole thing.

And that’s on purpose. Jesus sometimes uses short comparisons like this so one clear point stands out.

Back then, pearls were extremely rare and valuable, something only the wealthy owned. So when people heard “pearl of great price,” they didn’t think “nice jewelry.” They thought, “that’s one of the most valuable things in the world.”

Here’s what’s actually happening in the story.

A merchant is going around looking for valuable pearls, that’s his whole job. He knows what he’s looking for and he’s seen a lot of them. But then one day, he finds a pearl that’s on a completely different level, way more valuable than anything else he’s ever come across.

And when he realizes what he’s found, he doesn’t hesitate. He goes and sells everything he has just to get that one pearl.

And notice, it doesn’t describe this like a loss. It just says he did it, because once he saw the value of the pearl, everything else became worth less in comparison.

That’s the whole point of the story, Jesus is saying the kingdom of heaven is like that. It’s not just valuable, it’s more valuable than everything else put together. And when you actually understand that, giving things up for it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice, it feels like the obvious choice.

And the one clear point Jesus was trying to make stand out is this: the kingdom of heaven is worth more than everything else, so much that everything else becomes less in comparison.
