🧠 Devotional
When the Bible talks about dreams, it says two things:
Dreams can come from God.
Most of the time, they don’t.
So let’s start where Scripture starts, with the fact that most of the time, they don’t.
Ecclesiastes 5:3 says,
“A dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool.”
Most dreams are just our brains doing their thing after a long day.
We dream because the mind keeps working during sleep, processing what we experienced while awake.
That’s why Scripture tells us not to treat every dream like a message from God.
Ecclesiastes 5:7 says,
“Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.”
Scripture is even more direct about this.
Jeremiah 23:25 says,
“I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’”
At the same time, the Bible never says God cannot use dreams.
Job 33:14–15 says,
“For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds.”
When God spoke through dreams in Scripture, the people who received them knew they were from God because God identified Himself and spoke clearly.
Genesis 31:11–12 says,
“The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said, ‘Look up and see… for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.’”
But the Bible also explains that God does not speak the same way now as He did in earlier times.
Hebrews 1:1–2 says,
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…”
Dreams were one of many ways God spoke before. Now, His clearest and primary voice is found in Jesus and what has already been revealed.
When you dream, know it’s usually just that, a dream. And if God ever speaks through one, you won’t have to question it, just like we see in Genesis 31:11–12.
