🧠 Devotional
If someone asked you, “Who is God?” what would you say?
All of us would have different ways of getting to the same answer, because we each have a unique relationship with Him.
But here’s what the Bible says who God is.
There are short verses in the Bible that go like this, “God is ____.” So let’s start there.
God is:
“Spirit” (John 4:24).
“Light” (1 John 1:5).
“Love” (1 John 4:8).
“A consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29).
”Faithful” (1 Corinthians 1:9).
“True” (John 3:33).
“Just” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
“For us” (Romans 8:31).
Now let’s look at what the Bible says God is not.
God is not:
“A man” (Numbers 23:19).
“Mocked” (Galatians 6:7).
“Unjust” (Hebrews 6:10).
“A God of disorder” (1 Corinthians 14:33).
“The God of the dead” (Matthew 22:32).
“Tempted by evil, for He cannot be tempted by evil” (James 1:13).
“Served by human hands” (Acts 17:25).
“Far from any one of us” (Acts 17:27).
Keep in mind, we’re just putting a magnifying glass on the most direct verses that literally say who God is, even though all of Scripture teaches us who He is.
Each of us has a unique relationship with God. That means the way you answer “Who is God?” might sound a little different than someone else’s, and that doesn’t make it wrong. The Bible shows that God knows people personally, not just as a group, as shown in these verses:
Isaiah 43:1 says, “I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”
Psalm 139:1 says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.”
You have the privilege of telling people who God is through your own testimony, because He has summoned you by name and searched you and known you.
Just make sure the God you’re describing is actually the God of the Bible, the one He reveals Himself to be.
If you want our answer backed by Scripture, here it is:
God is the eternal Creator (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 90:2) who is holy (Isaiah 6:3) and just (Deuteronomy 32:4), yet full of love (1 John 4:8), who revealed Himself in Jesus Christ (John 1:18; Hebrews 1:3) to rescue humanity (John 3:16–17; 1 Timothy 1:15).
