🧠 Devotional
Hannah is introduced in Scripture not as a prophet, queen, or public leader, but as a woman with deep faith and deep pain. Her story appears at the very beginning of 1 Samuel and quietly shapes one of the most important moments in Israel’s history.
Hannah was the wife of Elkanah, a man who loved her deeply. Scripture is clear that she was cherished, yet love did not remove her sorrow. She was unable to have children, which in her culture carried not only grief, but public shame.
1 Samuel 1:2 (NIV)
“He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.”
Hannah’s pain was ongoing and personal. Peninnah provoked her regularly, reminding her of what she lacked. Year after year, Hannah wept and could not eat. Yet Scripture never describes her turning away from God. Instead, it shows her continuing to bring her pain to Him.
1 Samuel 1:7 (NIV)
“This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.”
When Hannah went to the temple, she did not hide her emotions or pretend strength. She prayed honestly and deeply, pouring out her heart before God.
1 Samuel 1:10 (NIV)
“In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.”
After Hannah prayed, her circumstances did not immediately change, but something inside her did. She rose from prayer with a quiet peace, trusting God with what she had surrendered.
1 Samuel 1:18 (NIV)
“Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.”
In time, God answered Hannah’s prayer. She gave birth to a son and named him Samuel. But Hannah’s faith did not end with receiving the blessing. She honored her vow and dedicated her son back to the Lord, trusting God with what mattered most.
Later, Hannah responded not with pride, but with praise.
1 Samuel 2:1 (NIV)
“Then Hannah prayed and said: ‘My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high.’”
Hannah’s life shows that God hears prayers spoken through tears, brings peace before answers, and remains faithful through every season. She was a woman known by God, heard by God, and used by God.
