“In the beginning God…” — Genesis 1:1

The first words of the Bible aren’t about us. They’re not about our purpose, our plans, or even our problems. They’re about God. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Before anything else existed, God was. He didn’t just witness the beginning — He was the beginning.

Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” We can plan, hustle, and dream all we want — but if we’re not starting with God, we’re building on sand. Jesus said the same in Matthew 7:24–27, describing the wise person as the one who hears His words and puts them into practice. That person builds on rock. Everyone else is building a life that might look good… until the storm hits.

Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us a blueprint: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” It doesn’t say to fit God in when you have time. It says to submit to Him in all your ways — to begin every thought, step, and plan with trust and dependence on Him.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, the first words were “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done…” (Matthew 6:9–10). Even prayer begins with worship, surrender, and alignment to God’s will. Not our agenda, but His.

The Psalms reinforce this rhythm. David often began by turning his heart toward God before addressing his needs or troubles. Psalm 5:3 says, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” Starting with God was not an occasional habit for David — it was a daily necessity.

Starting with God isn’t about checking a box or earning favor. It’s about recognizing who He is — the Alpha and the Omega (Revelation 22:13), the source of wisdom (James 1:5), peace (Isaiah 26:3), and strength (Isaiah 40:31). It’s about letting Him lead so we can follow in step with His Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Today, ask yourself: Am I building my day, my goals, and my future on the foundation of God’s truth — or on my own limited understanding?

The good news? His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23), which means no matter how you started yesterday, you can begin again — with Him.

Start with God.
