🧠 Devotional
Did Moses ever enter the Promised Land?
At first, no, he did not.
Near the end of his life, God let Moses see the land, but not go into it.
In Book of Deuteronomy it says this:
Deuteronomy 34:4 (NIV)
“Then the Lord said to him, ‘This is the land I promised… I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.’”
So Moses saw the Promised Land, but was not allowed to enter it.
So why not?
The reason goes back to a moment earlier in Book of Numbers. The people needed water, and God gave Moses a clear instruction.
Numbers 20:8 (NIV)
“Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.”
But instead, Moses responded out of frustration:
Numbers 20:10–11 (NIV)
“…Must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice…”
Water still came out, but Moses didn’t do what God said and did not honor God as holy before the people.
That’s why God says:
Numbers 20:12 (NIV)
“Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy… you will not bring this community into the land…”
So Moses didn’t enter because, in that moment, he didn’t fully trust God or honor Him before the people.
But that wasn’t the end of his story.
Later, during the Transfiguration of Jesus, Moses appears with Jesus:
Matthew 17:1–3 (NIV)
“…there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.”
This takes place in that same land, and the same man who was once told no is now standing there with Jesus.
This shows us something important… obedience matters, and leaders are held to a higher standard.
But that’s not the whole story.
And his life didn’t end there, and even when his faith fell short, God’s didn’t, and that’s true for us too when we fall short.
