🧠 Devotional
I’m going to ask you a cheesy question, but wait until the end to answer it for yourself.
Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?
Not that we need the explanation, but I’m going to give it anyway.
When you are driving, your hands are on the steering wheel the whole time. Every turn. Every lane change. Every little correction. You cannot just let go and hope the car figures it out. You literally cannot drive without it.
A spare tire is different. It sits hidden in the trunk, and you might even forget it is there. You only use it in a complete emergency when something blows out. And even then, it is rated for low speeds and low mileage. It is a short term fix, not something you rely on every day.
So here is the real question.
Is prayer something that guides your everyday decisions, or is it something you only reach for when life breaks down?
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray continually.” That sounds like a steering wheel, not a spare tire. Continual means constant, like keeping your hands on the wheel the whole drive.
Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” That sounds like steering too. Straight paths come from letting Him guide your direction, not just asking Him to fix things after you veer off.
And Hosea 6:4 says, “Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.” It describes love that shows up for a moment and then fades. That is like a spare tire. It appears for one specific situation, then disappears when it is no longer needed.
So now answer it honestly.
Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?
And if right now it feels like a spare tire, that is okay. You can start making it your steering wheel today.

🙏 Prayer (Guided by A.C.T.S.)
When you’re not sure how to pray, A.C.T.S. gives you a simple path to follow: Adore, Confess, Thank, and Ask.
Adoration: God, You guide my steps and make my paths straight.
Confession: Forgive me for treating prayer like a spare tire instead of my steering wheel.
Thanksgiving: Thank You that I can come to You at all times.
Supplication: Teach me to pray continually and let You guide every turn.
In Jesus name, Amen
