🧠 Devotional
There are several women named Mary in the Bible, which can make it confusing at first. One of them is Mary Magdalene, who is identified as being from Magdala. The Gospels do not give details about her family or background.
Luke 8:2 states that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her. After this, she is listed among the women who traveled with Jesus and helped support His ministry (Luke 8:1–3).
She is present at the crucifixion. John 19:25 says she stood near the cross while Jesus was dying.
She also sees where His body is laid after His death (Matthew 27:61).
On the first day of the week, she goes to the tomb early in the morning and sees that the stone has been removed (John 20:1). She runs to tell the disciples, and they come to the tomb and then leave (John 20:2–10).
She remains outside the tomb, weeping. When she looks inside, she sees two angels who ask why she is crying, and she says, “They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they have put him” (John 20:13).
She then turns around and sees Jesus standing there but does not recognize Him at first. Jesus asks her, “Why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” (John 20:15).
Jesus then says her name, “Mary,” and she recognizes Him and responds, “Rabboni,” which means Teacher (John 20:16).
Jesus tells her to go to the disciples and tell them (John 20:17).
Mary Magdalene goes to the disciples and says, “I have seen the Lord!” and reports what He had said to her (John 20:18).
So we learn this from Mary Magdalene’s story: Jesus chose her as the first witness of His resurrection, showing that God’s message is not limited by status, background, or expectations.
